Following a long day of presentations and contributions, the 2013 annual budget for Mayo County Council was adopted with little fuss on Monday evening in Castlebar. The only major change to the adopted budget, which was proposed by Fine Gael whip Cllr Joe Mellett and seconded by Fianna Fáil whip Cllr Micheál McNamara from the draft one that was presented to the members, was the need to find an extra €70,000 to fund some extra projects and to make up a €40,000 shortfall in the fire service budget when the members refused to increase the call out charge for the service from €150 to €200.

Despite having a collection rate for the Household Charge in excess of what the Department of Environment have said is needed in order to avoid any cuts in the 2012 Local Government fund, Mayo County Council is still going to be down €641,589 on its allocated funding this year.

Mayo County Council won’t have to worry about dealing with a €2.57 million hole in their budget if the collection rate for the household charge reaches between 75 and 80 per cent. The Mayo County Council is currently owed a large amount of money by central government that still has not been paid, it emerged this week. Cllr McNamara asked: “It was said that €9 million is owed to the council by the Government, has there been much progress made on recouping that.” Duggan told the meeting: “There has been very little movement with the Department, but discussions are ongoing between both sides.”

The members of Mayo County Council are to fund their own study trips in the future it was agreed at the June monthly meeting of the local authority.
